Butterfly Damper Valve for Industrial Airflow Control
Single-Blade Damper for Dust Collection, Ventilation and Industrial Duct Systems
What Is a Butterfly Damper Valve?
A butterfly damper valve is a single-blade airflow control device installed in industrial duct systems to regulate, isolate or shut off air, exhaust gas and dust-laden airflow. The blade rotates around a central shaft to change the effective flow area inside the duct.
Butterfly damper valves are commonly used in dust collection ducts, baghouse systems, cyclone outlets, fan lines and cement plant ventilation systems. Their compact single-blade structure makes them suitable for applications where installation space is limited and relatively simple airflow control is required.
Butterfly dampers are one of the main types of industrial damper valves used for airflow control in dust collection and process ventilation systems.
Manual, electric and pneumatic actuation can be selected according to damper size, operating frequency, control requirements and available utilities.
Key Features of Butterfly Dampers
| Feature | Engineering Value |
|---|---|
| Single-Blade Structure | Provides a compact structure, simple airflow control and straightforward actuator integration in industrial ducts. |
| Low Flow Obstruction When Fully Open | Helps reduce airflow resistance when the blade is fully or mostly open. |
| Manual, Electric, or Pneumatic Operation | Supports local operation, remote control, and automatic interlocking with dust collection or ventilation systems. |
| Carbon Steel or Stainless Steel Body | Allows selection according to duct environment, corrosion risk, temperature, and dust characteristics. |
| Positive and Negative Pressure Duct Service | Suitable for suction, exhaust and process-air ducts within the confirmed design pressure of the damper. |
| Custom Diameter and Flange Design | Available for standard and customized duct sizes according to project drawings. |
When Should You Use a Butterfly Damper Valve?
A butterfly damper valve is suitable when the project requires compact duct airflow control, simple shut-off, airflow regulation or equipment isolation in an industrial ventilation or dust collection system.
It is commonly selected for:
✅ Dust collector inlet and outlet ducts
✅ Bag filter branch ducts
✅ Cyclone separator exhaust outlets
✅ Fan inlet and outlet airflow control
✅ Cement plant ventilation lines
✅ Air slide blower and process-air ducts
✅ Material transfer dust extraction points
✅ Bulk loading and unloading dust collection systems
For larger ducts requiring multi-blade modulation or more uniform airflow distribution, a louver damper valve may be more suitable.
Manual, Electric and Pneumatic Actuation
| Actuation | Typical Use | Control |
|---|---|---|
| Manual | Occasional local adjustment | Handwheel / Lever |
| Electric | Remote positioning and automated airflow control | Local / PLC / DCS |
| Pneumatic | Frequent switching or interlocked operation | Solenoid / PLC |
Manual Butterfly Damper
A manual butterfly damper is suitable for applications where the blade position is adjusted locally and operating frequency is relatively low.
Manual operation can use a lever, handwheel or gearbox depending on damper diameter and required operating force.
It is generally suitable where remote automation or frequent position adjustment is not required.
Motorized Butterfly Damper
A motorized butterfly damper uses an electric actuator for remote opening, closing or intermediate position control.
For plant automation systems, electric actuators can be configured for local/remote operation and, where required, modulating control such as a 4–20 mA signal.
Actuator torque should be selected according to damper diameter, blade load, operating pressure and required control function.
Pneumatic Butterfly Damper
A pneumatic butterfly damper uses a pneumatic actuator or cylinder for automatic operation.
It is suitable where compressed air is available and relatively fast open-close movement or interlocked operation is required.
Solenoid valves, limit switches and position feedback can be provided according to the control system.

Damper performance parameters such as air leakage and pressure drop can be evaluated using standardized test methods such as ANSI/AMCA Standard 500-D for damper performance testing.
Butterfly Damper Valves for High-Temperature and Dust-Laden Air
Butterfly damper valves can be used in elevated-temperature air, exhaust gas and dust-laden duct systems when the structure and materials are selected for the actual operating conditions.
For these applications, the project should confirm:
✅ normal and maximum gas temperature;
✅ dust concentration and abrasiveness;
✅ duct pressure;
✅ damper diameter;
✅ required sealing level;
✅ operating frequency.
Higher-temperature applications may require changes to the body material, shaft arrangement, bearing protection, sealing components and actuator installation.
The allowable operating temperature should therefore be confirmed from the final construction rather than assumed from the damper type alone.
Butterfly Damper vs Louver Damper
| Selection Factor | Butterfly Damper | Louver Damper |
|---|---|---|
| Blade Structure | Single rotating blade | Multiple linked blades |
| Typical Duct | Compact round or rectangular ducts | Larger rectangular or process ducts |
| Airflow Control | General regulation and isolation | Smoother multi-blade modulation |
| Installation | Compact structure | Requires blade linkage space |
| Typical Use | Dust ducts, fan lines, cyclone outlets | Baghouse, kiln, preheater and large process ducts |
A butterfly damper is generally selected where compact construction and simple airflow control are priorities. For larger ducts requiring multi-blade airflow balancing, a louver damper valve may be more suitable.

Butterfly Dampers Control Airflow, Not Direct Powder Discharge
A butterfly damper is designed primarily for air, exhaust gas and dust-laden airflow inside industrial ducts. It is not normally used as the main shut-off or metering device for cement powder, fly ash or other bulk solids discharged directly from a silo or hopper.
For direct powder discharge, aflow control gate valve or slide gate valve is normally more suitable, depending on whether the process requires flow regulation or simple isolation.
Typical Installation Positions
| Installation Position | Main Purpose | Related Equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Dust Collector Inlet / Outlet | Isolates or regulates airflow entering and leaving the dust collector. | Dust collection system, pulse jet filter, bag filter. |
| Cyclone Separator Outlet | Controls exhaust airflow and supports stable cyclone operation. | Cyclone dust collector, fan, exhaust duct. |
| Bag Filter Branch Duct | Balances or isolates airflow in individual dust extraction branches. | Baghouse, filter chamber, branch duct. |
| Air Slide Blower / Process-Air Duct | Regulates or isolates the airflow supplied to the air slide aeration chamber or other process-air equipment. | Air slide conveyor blower, process-air duct, ventilation duct |
| Cement Plant Ventilation Line | Regulates ventilation airflow around mills, packing plants, and transfer points. | Cement mill, raw mill, packing line, transfer chute. |
| Fan Inlet / Outlet | Helps control air volume and system pressure before or after the fan. | Exhaust fan, induced draft fan, process fan. |
| Material Transfer Dust Extraction Point | Controls suction airflow near loading, unloading, or transfer equipment. | Loading spout, hopper, chute, conveyor transfer point. |
For cement plant duct applications, including dust collector branches, mill ventilation, fan ducts and suitable exhaust-air systems, see our guide to damper valve selection for cement plants.
How to Select the Right Butterfly Damper Valve
| Selection Factor | What to Confirm | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Duct Diameter | DN size, round duct diameter, flange standard, installation space. | The damper must match the duct connection and site layout. |
| Airflow Volume | Air volume, flow velocity, fan capacity, and system pressure. | These data affect blade size, actuator torque, and pressure loss. |
| Dust Type | Cement dust, fly ash, kiln dust, mineral powder, grain dust, or abrasive particles. | Dust characteristics affect sealing design, wear resistance, and maintenance frequency. |
| Operating Temperature | Normal temperature, peak temperature, hot gas condition. | High-temperature ducts may require heat-resistant materials and protected shaft structures. |
| Control Purpose | Shut-off, airflow regulation, isolation, or balancing. | Different purposes require different actuator types and sealing levels. |
| Actuator Type | Manual, electric or pneumatic; confirm any PLC/DCS or position-control requirements. | The actuator should match automation level, response speed, and available site utilities. |
| Sealing Requirement | Standard sealing, low leakage, shaft sealing, or flange sealing. | Better sealing reduces air leakage and improves dust collection efficiency. |
| Control Signal | Limit switch, position indicator, open/close signal, or PLC feedback. | Feedback is important for automatic control and safe system operation. |
| Installation Orientation | Horizontal/vertical duct, shaft direction, available actuator space | Orientation affects shaft load, actuator arrangement and maintenance access |
To select the right butterfly damper valve, buyers should confirm duct diameter, airflow volume, dust type, operating temperature, control purpose, actuator type, sealing requirement, and control signal before quotation.

Butterfly Damper Valve FAQs
What is the difference between a butterfly damper valve and a butterfly valve?
A butterfly damper valve is mainly designed for low-pressure industrial air, exhaust gas and dust-laden duct systems. A butterfly valve is generally designed as a pressure-containing piping valve for liquid or gas service, with different body, seat, flange and sealing requirements. The two products may look similar, but their design conditions and applications are different.
Can a butterfly damper valve provide airtight shut-off?
Not necessarily. Standard butterfly dampers are mainly used for airflow regulation and isolation, and some air leakage may remain when the blade is closed. If a project requires low leakage, the sealing structure and allowable leakage level should be specified before design.
Can a butterfly damper be retrofitted into an existing duct?
In many cases, yes. Retrofit feasibility depends on the existing duct diameter, flange or welded connection, available installation space, shaft orientation, actuator clearance and access for maintenance. Existing duct drawings or site dimensions should be provided before production.
What can make a butterfly damper difficult to open or close?
Common causes include dust buildup around the blade, shaft misalignment, bearing contamination, deformation from temperature, insufficient actuator torque or mechanical interference. The actual cause should be checked before increasing actuator size.
Can the actuator be changed later from manual to electric or pneumatic?
It may be possible if the shaft, mounting bracket and operating torque are suitable for the new actuator. If future automation is planned, it is better to confirm this requirement during the original damper design.
How often should a butterfly damper valve be inspected?
Inspection frequency depends on operating hours, dust concentration, temperature and switching frequency. The blade, shaft, bearings, sealing surfaces, actuator connection and position feedback devices should be checked regularly, with shorter intervals for dusty or high-temperature service.
