Manual Flow Control Gate Valve for Bulk Materials

What Is a Manual Flow Control Gate Valve?

A manual flow control gate valve is a hand-operated discharge valve used to adjust the effective opening beneath a silo, hopper or bulk powder handling system. The opening is adjusted locally through a handwheel, lever or manual gear mechanism to control the amount of cement, fly ash, raw meal, lime powder or other compatible dry powder entering downstream equipment.

Manual operation is most suitable for applications where discharge adjustment is occasional and remote or automatic actuation is not required.

For other actuation options and general selection guidance, see our Flow Control Gate Valve range.

Key Features

Manual Opening Adjustment — The discharge opening can be adjusted locally using a handwheel, lever or manual gear mechanism.
No External Power Required — Manual operation does not require electrical power or compressed air.
Suitable for Occasional Adjustment — A practical option where the required opening position does not need frequent or automated changes.
Controlled Powder Discharge — The adjustable opening helps regulate the amount of dry powder entering downstream conveying or loading equipment.
Simple Mechanical Operation — The manual drive arrangement reduces control-system complexity and simplifies routine operation.
Customized Connection Dimensions — Valve opening, flange dimensions and connection arrangement can be adapted to the silo or hopper outlet.

How Does a Manual Flow Control Gate Work?

The manual flow control gate valve adjusts the effective discharge opening through a handwheel, lever or manual gear mechanism. A larger opening allows more material to pass, while a smaller opening restricts the amount of powder entering the downstream equipment.

Once the required opening is set, the valve provides a fixed local discharge setting until further manual adjustment is required. Actual material throughput depends on the valve opening as well as bulk density, material flowability, silo head and downstream equipment.

Bulk-solid flow properties such as bulk density, internal friction and wall friction can significantly influence material discharge behavior; ASTM D6773 provides a recognized test method for evaluating these characteristics.

When Should You Choose a Manual Flow Control Gate?

A manual flow control gate valve is a practical choice when discharge adjustment is occasional, local manual operation is acceptable, and remote or automatic actuation is not required.

A manual flow control gate is a practical choice when:
✅ The discharge opening only requires occasional adjustment
✅ Local manual operation is acceptable
✅ Electrical power or compressed air is not required for actuation
✅ The application does not require PLC or remote positioning
✅ A simple mechanical discharge-control arrangement is preferred

For frequent remote operation, a pneumatic flow control gate may be more suitable. Where electric actuation and automated position control are required, a motorized flow control gate can be considered.

For a broader comparison of manual, pneumatic and motorized configurations, see our Flow Control Gate Selection Guide.

For applications where powder discharge feeds a loading system, the valve can be installed upstream of equipment such as a Cement Bulk Loader.

Typical Applications

A manual flow control gate valve is commonly used for controlled dry powder discharge in cement plants and other bulk powder handling systems.

✅ Cement silo discharge
✅ Fly ash silo and hopper discharge
✅ Raw meal and mineral powder handling
✅ Lime and limestone powder discharge
Air slide conveyor inlet control
Screw conveyor or downstream feeder inlet control
✅ Cement packing and bulk loading feed systems

Wet, sticky, strongly cohesive or oversized lumpy materials should be evaluated separately before selection.

Manual Flow Control Gate FAQs

What is a manual flow control gate used for?

A manual flow control gate is used to adjust the discharge opening beneath a silo, hopper or dry powder handling system. It is commonly applied to cement, fly ash, raw meal, lime powder and other compatible dry powders where local manual adjustment is sufficient.

How is a manual flow control gate different from a slide gate valve?

A slide gate valve is mainly used for full-open or full-close isolation, while a manual flow control gate provides an adjustable opening for controlled powder discharge. It is suitable where the operator needs to set the discharge opening rather than simply isolate the material flow.

When should I choose a manual flow control gate instead of a pneumatic or motorized type?

A manual type is usually suitable when opening adjustments are infrequent, local operation is acceptable and automatic or remote control is not required. Pneumatic or motorized operation is generally more appropriate for frequent or automated adjustment.

Can the gate be used at intermediate opening positions?

Yes. The manual operating mechanism can be adjusted to set an intermediate opening according to the required discharge condition. Actual material throughput also depends on bulk density, flowability, silo head and downstream equipment.

Can a manual flow control gate provide accurate dosing?

The valve adjusts the discharge opening but is not a precision weighing or metering device by itself. Applications requiring accurate dosing normally use additional weighing or metering equipment downstream.

What information is required for selection and quotation?

Please provide the material name, bulk density, moisture, material temperature, required discharge capacity, silo or hopper outlet dimensions, installation position and downstream equipment. LVRUI can then confirm the suitable valve size, manual operating mechanism and connection arrangement.
