What Is a Bucket Elevator?

Types of Bucket Elevators

Different materials require different traction components, bucket designs, operating speeds and discharge methods. LVRUI supplies four main series for cement plants and industrial bulk material handling.

A belt-type unit normally provides quieter operation and is commonly used for dry powder. Chain-type equipment is generally selected for heavier, hotter or more abrasive materials. The final selection must be based on the actual temperature, particle size, bulk density, moisture and required capacity.

Bucket elevators are widely used in cement plants, grinding stations, terminals, mineral processing facilities and dry powder production lines.

Wet, sticky or strongly compacting materials require separate evaluation. Material buildup in the boot section or buckets can increase resistance, reduce discharge efficiency and overload the drive system.

For long-distance horizontal transport before or after vertical lifting, a belt conveyor may be used to connect the bucket elevator with storage or processing equipment.

How Does a Bucket Elevator Work?

Material enters the boot section through the lower inlet and fills the moving buckets. The belt or chain carries the loaded buckets upward through the enclosed casing.

When the buckets reach the head section, the material is discharged into the outlet chute. Depending on the operating speed, bucket shape and material characteristics, discharge may occur through centrifugal force, gravity or a combination of both.

The empty buckets then return downward to the boot section and repeat the conveying cycle.

Stable operation depends on controlled feeding, correct belt or chain tension, aligned head and tail components, suitable bucket spacing and an unobstructed discharge chute. Excessive feeding can cause material accumulation in the boot section and increase the risk of overload.

How to Select the Correct Type

A TD belt bucket elevator is generally suitable for normal-temperature cement, fly ash and dry powder where relatively quiet operation is required.

An NE plate chain elevator is commonly selected for clinker, slag and other heavy or abrasive materials. Its lower operating speed and heavy-duty chain construction are suitable for demanding conveying duties. For abrasive clinker or slag handling, the elevator can also be connected with an enclosed chain conveyor for horizontal material transfer.

A TH ring chain type can be considered for general granular and medium-duty bulk material applications.

An HL chain type is used for general vertical lifting with deep buckets, but the final suitability should be confirmed according to the material and required capacity.

The selection should not be based only on price or nominal capacity. Incorrect bucket speed, inlet feeding or discharge design can cause material return, bucket damage, blockage or excessive wear.

The feeding capacity should be controlled to match the elevator’s actual conveying rate. A screw conveyor, controlled feeder, or other upstream conveying equipment may be required to provide stable material feeding and prevent overload at the boot section.

Belt or Chain Bucket Elevator?

The choice between a belt and chain configuration mainly depends on the material and operating conditions.

A belt elevator is commonly used for dry powder and relatively light materials. It normally operates with lower noise and does not require chain lubrication, but the belt temperature limit and tracking condition must be considered.

A chain elevator is more suitable for heavy, abrasive or elevated-temperature materials. However, the chain, sprockets and buckets generally require closer inspection for elongation, wear and alignment.

Neither configuration is universally better. The correct design is the one that matches the material, capacity, height, temperature and maintenance environment.
