Rod Gate for Clinker and Coarse Bulk Material Discharge
Heavy-Duty Pin Gate for Silos, Hoppers, Bunkers and Feeders
What Is a Rod Gate?
A rod gate is a heavy-duty bulk material isolation device consisting of multiple parallel steel rods installed across the outlet of a silo, hopper or bunker. Also called a pin gate or needle gate, it is mainly used for clinker, aggregate, limestone, coke, ore and other coarse or lumpy materials. The rods can be withdrawn individually, sequentially or through a linked operating mechanism to open the material passage above downstream equipment such as apron feeders, belt feeders, vibrating feeders and screens.
How Does a Rod Gate Work?
When the rod gate is closed, the parallel steel rods extend across the material outlet and support the bulk material above the downstream equipment.
To open the gate, the rods are withdrawn from the material passage. Depending on the selected structure, they may be pulled out individually, in groups or through a synchronized drive mechanism.
Sequential rod withdrawal can reduce the operating resistance caused by a large outlet, heavy material column or irregular lumps. After maintenance or process isolation is completed, the rods are inserted back into the material passage to close the gate.
A rod gate is primarily used for:
✅ Isolating coarse material above a feeder or crusher
✅ Supporting material during downstream equipment maintenance
✅ Opening a large hopper outlet gradually
✅ Reducing the force required to open a fully loaded discharge point
✅ Providing coarse discharge control for lumpy bulk solids
A rod gate is not intended for precise metering or tight shut-off of fine powders.
Key Features
✅ Parallel heavy-duty rod structure
Multiple steel rods support the material above the outlet without using a solid sliding blade.
✅ Suitable for coarse and lumpy materials
The open structure is designed for clinker, stone, coke, ore and similar bulk solids.
✅ Reduced opening resistance
Rods can be withdrawn sequentially to reduce the force associated with heavy material loads and large discharge openings.
✅ Customized rod diameter and spacing
Rod size, quantity and spacing are selected according to the maximum lump size, outlet dimensions and material load.
✅ Three operating methods
Manual, pneumatic and electro-hydraulic rod gate configurations are available.
✅ Large outlet customization
The frame, flange, rod arrangement and operating direction can be manufactured according to the silo or hopper outlet.
Rod Gate Drive Options
Manual Rod Gate
A manual rod gate normally allows the operator to withdraw and insert the rods individually or in a defined sequence.
This configuration has a simple structure and is suitable for maintenance isolation points or applications that do not require frequent operation.
Handles, locking devices and rod guides can be configured according to the available operating space.
Pneumatic Rod Gate
A pneumatic rod gate uses air cylinders and a mechanical linkage to operate individual rods or grouped rod assemblies.
It is suitable where compressed air is available and remote or automatic operation is required. Solenoid valves, limit switches and PLC interfaces can be added according to the required operating sequence.
The cylinder force must be selected according to the material load, rod quantity and expected operating resistance.
Electro-Hydraulic Rod Gate
An electro-hydraulic rod gate uses an electro-hydraulic actuator to provide controlled rod movement and higher operating force.
This configuration is suitable for large outlets, heavy material columns and demanding industrial applications where manual operation would be difficult.
The actuator stroke, thrust, installation direction and control signals must be confirmed according to the rod arrangement and site conditions.
Suitable Materials and Applications
Typical Materials
✅ Cement clinker
✅ Sand and gravel aggregates
✅ Limestone
✅ Coke
✅ Ore
✅ Coal
✅ Slag lumps
✅ Crushed stone
✅ Other coarse bulk solids
Material suitability depends on the normal particle size, maximum lump size, temperature, abrasiveness, moisture and tendency to become compacted.
Rod gates are generally not recommended where tight shut-off of fine powders such as cement, fly ash or mineral powder is required. For fine powder isolation, a solid-blade slide gate or another sealed valve structure is normally more suitable.
Typical Applications
✅ Clinker silo discharge outlets
✅ Aggregate storage hoppers
✅ Limestone bunkers
✅ Coke and coal bins
✅ Ore storage hoppers
✅ Above apron feeders
✅ Above belt feeders
✅ Above vibrating feeders or screens
✅ Maintenance isolation above crushers
✅ Heavy-duty bulk material processing lines
For direct truck loading beneath a clinker silo, the rod gate can be installed above a clinker bulk loader to provide maintenance isolation and controlled material release.
Cement clinker is a coarse intermediate material produced through high-temperature pyroprocessing before it is ground into finished cement. For general industry background, see the U.S. Geological Survey information on cement and clinker.
Rod Gate vs Slide Gate Valve
| Item | Rod Gate | Slide Gate Valve |
|---|---|---|
| Main Structure | Multiple parallel steel rods | One solid sliding blade |
| Typical Materials | Coarse, granular and lumpy solids | Powders, granules and smaller particles |
| Main Function | Heavy-load isolation and gradual opening | Shut-off or flow regulation |
| Powder Sealing | Not intended for tight powder sealing | Better suited to powder isolation |
| Opening Method | Rods withdrawn individually or in groups | Blade moves as one complete plate |
| Large Lump Handling | More suitable when correctly sized | Large lumps may interfere with blade closure |
| Typical Installation | Above feeder, screen or crusher | Silo, hopper or chute outlet |
| Metering Function | Not for precise metering | Some designs can provide coarse regulation |
Select a rod gate when the application involves coarse or lumpy material, a large outlet and a high material load above downstream equipment.
Select a slide gate valve when a solid closing plate and better isolation of powders or smaller particles are required.
Where gradual discharge regulation is required for clinker or aggregates, a sector gate may be more suitable than a rod gate used primarily for material isolation.

How to Select a Rod Gate
Rod gate selection should not be based only on the silo outlet dimensions.
Please provide the following information for selection:
✅ Material name and bulk density
✅ Normal particle size and maximum lump size
✅ Material temperature, moisture and abrasiveness
✅ Silo or hopper outlet dimensions and material-column height
✅ Downstream equipment and required discharge capacity
✅ Available rod-withdrawal space
✅ Preferred drive method, control requirements and site drawing
Rod diameter, spacing and actuator force are selected according to the material load, maximum lump size, outlet dimensions and available operating space.

Rod Gate FAQs
What is a rod gate used for?
A rod gate isolates coarse or lumpy bulk materials above feeders, crushers, screens and other downstream equipment. It is commonly installed beneath clinker silos, aggregate hoppers, limestone bunkers and ore bins.
Is a rod gate suitable for clinker?
Yes. A clinker rod gate can handle coarse and abrasive clinker when the rod diameter, spacing, construction material and frame strength are selected according to the maximum lump size, temperature and material load.
Can a rod gate handle cement powder or fly ash?
A standard rod gate is not recommended for tight isolation of fine powders because material can pass through the spaces between the rods. A solid-blade slide gate or flow control gate is normally more suitable.
What is the difference between a rod gate and a slide gate?
A rod gate uses multiple parallel rods and is mainly intended for coarse or lumpy material. A slide gate uses a solid blade and provides better shut-off for powders, granules and smaller particles.
How are rod diameter and spacing selected?
They are selected according to the outlet size, maximum lump size, material density, material-column height, temperature, abrasiveness and required supporting strength.
What information is required for a quotation?
Please provide the material, particle size, maximum lump size, temperature, bulk density, outlet dimensions, material-column height, downstream equipment, available operating space and preferred drive method.
